Woodland TapestriES, 2024

Living on the edge of one of Toronto’s great ravines, woodlands are an integral part of Kaufman’s life. Her work draws on this connection. Woodlands and forests become the stage for a bodily presence, one dissolving into the other. Referencing techniques from art history she uses the human silhouette and tapestry-like patterning to explore an interactive relationship between the human and natural world, a place where the sublime and the chaotic reside.
Woodland Tapestries is a two part series of photo-based work and drawings. The photo work is composed of eight photo lustre pigment prints of varying sizes. The related drawing series, titled Marginalia is composed of a suite of twelve drawings. Like the photo work the drawings incorporate the human silhouette, a pattern motif, as well as asemic text.
